Public-policy articles written by Dave Haigler:

  1. Bush Betrayed Us, an op-ed piece published in Dec. 2003 that announced Dave's withdrawal from the Republican Party and switch to the Democrats, due to the circumstances surrounding Bush's handling of the Iraq war.
  2. Roe v. Wade Rehearing Motion Fatally Flawed, a piece Dave wrote for the Abilene Reporter News on March 3, 2004, arguing that lower federal courts have no authority to review a decision of the U.S. Supreme Court.
  3. Christian Ideologues in a Machiavellian Political World, a speech Dave gave to the College Democrats of Abilene's three church-related universities -- Abilene Christian University (Church of Christ), McMurry University (United Methodist), and Hardin-Simmons University (Southern Baptist) -- in April 2004, in which he tries to explain how political labels such as "conservative" and "liberal" have lost their meaning, and how a Republican "conservative" could be more liberal than a Democrat "liberal."
  4. Church and State - Values informed by religion are essential to govern, by Dave Haigler, published July 18, 2004, in the Abilene Reporter News, showing religious values cannot be purged from public life.
  5. Christianity & Politics, by Dave Haigler & Amy Perez, Sept. 6, 2004, which seeks to answer the question, "How can a Christian be a Democrat?"  The question assumes that one party can be shown to be more Christian than another, or that one party is the "Christian" party.  The authors discuss those assumptions and show that the Democratic Party stands for many Christian values.
  6. Choosing a Team, an op-ed piece published in The Brand in Sept./Oct. 2004 that tries to explain why single-issue voters feel bound to the Republican Party, and how if they re-examine their assumptions about whether the Republican power elite is sincerely committed to the pro-life plank, they might not be so bound.
  7. Two-Party Viability, a piece dated Oct. 17, 2004, that Dave wrote at the invitation of the Abilene Reporter News to present the local Democrats' take on the upcoming 2004 election.
  8. Dispensationalism Refuted - Flaws of Pro-Israel Rapturism - an explanation of a flawed theology that has skewed U.S. foreign policy to be knee-jerk supportive of Israel, By Dave Haigler, November 2004.  Because of the perceived influence of dispensational rapturism upon U.S. foreign policy towards Israel, there is an increased interest in this theory and its views of the end-times.  A biblical exegesis by a Texas lawyer showing how this rapture theory is not supported by the Bible.
  9. Cultural Irrelevance of Fundamentalism & Dispensationalism--a summary of how some segments of Christianity have been culturally impotent in the 20th century, by Dave Haigler, published December 2004.
  10. Backhanded Racism - a summary of Dave Haigler's background growing up in the deep south during the 50's and 60's, his exposure to racism and growing revulsion of it, and his coming to see that the Republican Party does nothing for minorities and that civil rights laws are still needed, published December 2004.
